Nika N.

In-Person and Online Tutor

Hi there, my name is Nika. I graduated with Distinction from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's in English literature. I have been tutoring for over 8 years and I believe deeply in the idea that with the right tools, everyone is able to reach their full potential. I have tutored all ages across many different subjects - from students as young as 4 transitioning into Kindergarten to older adults needing help with reading literacy. Most recently, I've worked specifically in reading programs that implement sensory-cognitive instruction, focused on reading/writing and math. This was also with students of different ages, but primarily with those in elementary and middle school. I enjoy teaching and have been fortunate enough to be around teachers and mentors who feel as passionate as I do. I hope to take that passion and share it with every student I work with.

I also love learning and am always trying to teach myself something new; most recently I’ve been learning to crochet and trying to pick up a new language.

Robert H.

I been tutoring for 9 years and I believe that before you can build something( skills)  one must have a strong foundation (mindd set). I have tutored students from middle school up to college level. I've worked primarily in pre algebra/ algebra to help determine what branch of math best suits the student progressing forward. As of recently, I have been tutoring middle school aged students to better understand their work through visuals and examples. I enjoy tutoring and am fortunate to been around teachers and colleagues that inspired me. I want to help students understand their work and hopefully find knowledge seeking rewarding.

Jamie K.

Jamie K.

In-Person and Online Tutor

University of Oregon - Master’s in Child and Family Therapy

Greetings!  My name is Jamie, and I have taught students of all ages, mostly K-5, in subjects ranging from SAT analogies to yogic breathing techniques.  My specialties include reading comprehension, grammar, and writing.  As a clinical intern, I often worked to support children struggling both academically and socially, and my pedagogical philosophies are deeply informed by those experiences.  I see teaching as a collaborative, holistic process tailored to individual learning styles, needs and aptitudes, and psychological development.  Confidence is often the largest barrier when students are grappling with unfamiliar or challenging material.  I believe that providing the right encouragement can really boost feelings of self-efficacy and foster renewed excitement about learning.  In my spare time, I enjoy practicing yoga, playing around on the drums, strengthening culinary muscles, and reading science fiction novels.

Hello, My name is Oscar. I have a BA in Mathematics with a focus on Education from UC Santa Cruz. I have been tutoring for well over 8 years, mainly math subjects, but also some high school Spanish and K-5 ELA. I have tutored K-12, as well as college students and adult learners. I also have many years experience tutoring students with learning "disabilities", including dyslexia, ADD, etc. The majority of my students have been in Middle and High School math, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. I have some experience tutoring Calculus but it was many years ago. This school year I will be tutoring a high school Calculus student (whom I tutored in Pre Calc over the summer) and so will be more ready to take on other Calculus students if need be. Through patience, creativity, dynamism, encouragement and engagement I am able to help each student not only gain a greater enjoyment and confidence in the subject matter but also in the learning process itself, not to mention improve their grades.

Hello, my name is Priscilla and I come from Madrid, Spain. I got my bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton in Ohio and my master’s degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in Spain. One of my goals in life was to be an educator, so although I studied Business Administration, I decided to direct my professional path towards the Educational area. I began my career as a university professor at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I lived for several years. At that time, I taught courses such as Business Administration, International Business, Marketing, Strategic Planning and Consumer Behavior among others. In addition, I contributed to the university with the creation of a Master’s degree with a specialization in Marketing. After this amazing experience, I decided to return to Madrid and started a career as a Spanish and English teacher. For the last 14 years, I have been teaching children from 5 to 18 years old and it has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. I love working with children and enjoy sharing my knowledge with them. When I teach, I use fun techniques like role-play, dialogue, language games, literature, film, and other formal exercises. We work with grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and composition. I enjoy creating lessons that help students communicate properly and understand the language, and it's amazing to see their progress and evolution. Everything flows when you do what you enjoy the most.

Meehna G.

In-Person and Online Tutor

Hello, my name is Meehna, and welcome to my profile! I graduated from UCLA with a BA in English and received my MFA from USC in the Cinematic Arts program. I’ve taught English to both middle and high school students at exclusive private schools in the Los Angeles area. While in the classroom, I developed my own curriculum and co-created a grammar program. I’m especially skilled in teaching and improving writing, which can be a tough nut to crack. I’ve helped many students craft compelling college essays that have put them over the top in gaining admission to the college of their dreams. I love working with students and seeing the lights go on. The twinkling eyes and smiles give me a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. When I’m teaching, I bring imagination, creativity and fun to learning, designing each program to suit individual needs and style. Most important, I get results. I’ve had the pleasure of working with all kinds of students, from those in advanced AP classes, to those on the spectrum. I believe everyone can improve and relish igniting the spark. My experience also extends beyond the classroom. I’m a professional journalist with bylines in publications including the Financial Times, Huffington Post, Business Insider and Robb Report.

In addition, I volunteered with Young Storytellers and InsideOut Writers, and am currently a mentor at both my alma maters.

In my spare time, I like to write, go to outdoor concerts, watch standup comedy, and, some might say, play a mean game of pickleball.

I am more than just a tutor to my students. I am a mentor. I am an advocate for children and I think it shows in the relationships I have built with students and their families. I prepare students not only for class but for life – honing self-confidence, developing compassion and respect for others, and raising awareness in students of their own potential as people. I help students develop a better sense of themselves and prepare them for life later on as adults. It’s an honor to serve in behalf of my students and we have fun in the process! And by the way, I'm a great cook!

I have tutored students from pre-algebra to differential equations. Through my years of tutoring, I’ve learned everybody has their own way of understanding mathematics. From analogies to games of memorization I’ve came up with different teaching formats that have helped each student understand the subject they need to learn. Some students need every step broken down for them and some students just need a particular method that puts all the steps of problem solving into one. Over the years I have interacted with thousands of students with different personalities and love to help others achieve their goals in life.

I am currently studying to be a chemical Engineer and I love to write scripts for movies and television shows.
I look forward to working with new students!

Mathematics didn’t come naturally to me. I grew up struggling with the subject but everything changed when I met the right teacher who understood such struggles and helped reach where I am today. • Maggie Z.

    In-Person Tutor

My name is Maggie, and I recently moved to Los Angeles from Indiana. I went to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and double majored in general and special education. During this time I did student teaching in first grade and middle school special education. I organized lessons, created activities, and ran assessments by myself. After graduating, I taught 4th and 5th grade special education for two years, but then decided to change up the scenery around me. I was an inclusion teacher during this time, which required me to go into different classrooms all day and support the head teachers. I would take the content that they were teaching that week and come up with new ways to deliver it to struggling students. At times I would pull a small group to the back of the room and teach the same lesson that the rest of the class was learning, but in a different way. I also would take groups out of class and into my office to do more direct and intentional instruction. I am very comfortable working with groups of kids who have different learning abilities. I taught all subjects; math, reading, writing, phonics, history, and social skills. I truly believe that all students are able to learn, but sometimes it requires creative techniques to get there. I look forward to meeting new students.

Shortly after she homeschooled her own three children and tutored others in the homeschool community. Another opportunity arose to teach science with Biola Star Academics, a homeschool co-op affiliated with Biola University. Ms. Faulcon taught and supervised teachers with the Biola University School of Education and now teaches in Long Beach Unified School District. One pertinent truth stands out from over two decades as an educator is that everyone learns differently, the best educators help others find their way.
